Progress on slip repairs

Auckland Transport (AT) is almost there with fixing slips and flood damage from the 2023 storm and cyclone events, with 90 per cent of jobs now completed.

Recent repairs include a major 70-metre slip on Red Hill Road, near Te Arai, which has been closed except for residents since May 2023.

AT says Downer NZ completed the work on May 5, one month ahead of schedule. The contractors had to move the road three metres back and build two wooden retaining walls to reinforce banks above and below the road.

Drainage improvements, roadside structural upgrades and the installation of a new barrier have also been carried out.

The six-month slip repair project on Leigh Road at Upper Whangateau, near Schollum Road, was also fully completed recently. Necessary work included constructing a new 80-metre long timber and steel retaining wall and relocating the power poles and lines.

AT says there are still nine major slip sites currently being worked on, including Waterfall Corner on Matakana Valley Road, and a further 32 sites across Auckland that are yet to be started.
