Quick thinking protects precious wildlife at Shakespear

After a vehicle accidentally drove though the NZ Defence Force gate at Shakespear’s Army Bay recently, a big hole threatened the pest free status of the sanctuary, and the wildlife that live there, such as little spotted kiwi, hihi, wētāpunga, native lizards and more.

Knowing that this would put the rare native birds and wildlife within the sanctuary at risk of predators getting in, the Northern Regional Parks ranger team, comprised of Rob Brown, Emma Whitton, Bruce Harrison, and Sam Russell sprang into action to get the damaged gate dismantled, source supplies and get them on site to rebuild a replacement gate that would seal the gap.

They pulled out all the stops to construct a new temporary gate from plywood, mesh and the all-important top hood, which prevents animals from climbing over Using all their skills and resources, they were able to successfully install a new and robust looking fully functional temporary gate by nightfall, within the same day.
