Rules tightened to stop seaweed spread

Tougher restrictions to prevent the spread of the invasive seaweed Caulerpa, which make it illegal to anchor most vessels in three bays at Aotea Great Barrier Island, came into force on October 31.

The Controlled Area Notice and a rāhui imposed by mana whenua for Aotea, cover Blind Bay, Whangaparapara Harbour and Tryphena Harbour.

Anchoring with or without a permit is no longer permitted except in an emergency.
