Summerset Falls resident Jan Harris has won a national gardening award.
Her striking mandevilla arch, at the entrance to her home, won her the Prized Potted Plant (Indoor or Outdoor) Award in a competition run across Summerset Villages nationwide. The competition was judged by landscape designer and television and radio host Tony Murrell.
Gardening has always been a beloved hobby for Jan, one that has gradually become an addictive activity. In her view, once you learn how to garden, it is almost impossible to stop.
“I am very creative and enjoy doing things differently,” she says. “I planted two red mandevilla in pots, while the white ones were planted in the ground beside one of the pots. After bending a six-foot steel rod around a large tree trunk, with some help, to form an arch, the plants began to climb.
“I love to see a front door that is welcoming and makes you want to walk up to it and step inside.”
Jan says the simplicity of having a beautiful space to admire can completely change the mood of the day.
“If you are having a bit of a down day and walk into your garden, it is a really happy place to be.”
