Waste Management NZ has confirmed it is lodging an application using the Government’s fast-track consenting process to extend operations at Redvale Landfill, a move that has heightened concern among Dairy Flat residents who have long opposed further expansion of the site.
If accepted, the application would be referred to an expert panel rather than going through a standard resource consent hearing.
Redvale is Auckland’s largest operating landfill and receives a mix of domestic, commercial and construction waste. Residents living near the site say they are frustrated by the latest development, given their repeated calls for tighter environmental controls and an end to expansion plans.
Opposition in Dairy Flat has been ongoing for many years, with concerns focusing on odour, truck movements, fire risk, groundwater contamination and the scale of the facility close to Dairy Flat primary school and residential housing. (Hibiscus Matters, June 16).
Residents say seeking a fast-track pathway feels like an attempt to bypass community input. They want the application publicly notified and assessed in full, arguing that decisions on waste infrastructure should involve affected communities.
Waste Management says Redvale remains a critical part of Auckland’s waste network and that the extension is needed to ensure continued capacity.
If the fast-track application is accepted, a panel will review technical evidence and may invite submissions, although community participation is not guaranteed.
