Six volunteers joined the Mangawhai Community Park Weed Warriors for their first working bee last month, cutting back the climbing asparagus that has been smothering native trees and shrubs.
“It was hugely satisfying to remove the stems that had masses of small, white flowers forming. They turn into berries which contain seeds which birds consume and then spread around,” Weed Warriors co-founder Kelly Creaghan says.
Creaghan and fellow co-founder Jes Magill formed the group with support from Piroa Conservation Trust after seeing how aggressively the climbing weed was spreading through the park. Their plan is to meet on the third Sunday of each month.
“Weed Warriors is all about breaking the life cycle of this invasive weed and reclaiming the space for the native shrubs and trees,” Magill says.
The next working bees are on October 18 and November 15, from 9am to 11am. For details, visit Mangawhai Community Park Weed Warriors on Facebook.
