Biosecurity New Zealand is stepping up its response to the discovery of yellow-legged hornets (Vespa velutina) on Auckland’s North Shore, with staff working around the clock to track and contain the invasive pest. North Commissioner Mike Inglis said investigators, lab staff and field teams were methodically searching affected areas and working closely with the public, who have already provided more than 2500 reports. To date, 142 traps have been laid where female hornets were detected, checked daily, with none yet caught. Surveillance teams are inspecting trees, roof eaves and fence lines for nests, while a new trial of protein bait traps is set to begin soon. Since the first detection on October 17, five queen hornets and their nests have been found and safely removed – four in Glenfield and one in nearby Birkdale.
Everyone in New Zealand is being asked to stay alert. Suspected hornets or nests can be reported at report.mpi.govt.nz or by calling 0800 809 966.
