Just a few weeks out from the election, Hibiscus Matters conducted a street and online poll of 50 voters in the Whangaparāoa electorate to get a snapshot of which party might come out on top, and key concerns. And the results were somewhat surprising.
We asked – If the election were held tomorrow, which party would you vote for? What is a key issue you would base your voting choice on?
Note: Forty-eight per cent of our sample were over the age of 45, and 52 per cent were under 45.
Take outs
- The high percentage voting Green, versus just 8 per cent for ACT in what is traditionally a right wing electorate.
- Almost equal support for Labour and National.
- There were 14 per cent of voters still undecided just a few weeks from election day.
- The high cost of living was a key concern, but participants were divided on which party they would vote for to improve the situation.
- A big age range are giving their vote to the Greens.
Key issues
The biggest concerns in our sample were living costs, education and the economy (these were equal – 5 mentions each). Close behind these were youth employment, the environment, and fair wages/taxes. Two in our sample prioritised “less red tape”. There was only one mention of healthcare as an issue. Other issues raised once only in our sample were: a fair deal for older people, crime, fisheries sustainability, LGBTQ rights, immigration and petrol prices.
