Coasties threw their support behind Pink Ribbon Breakfast Day last week with events taking place across the district.

The team at You Travel Ōrewa kicked off the day with an early morning breakfast fundraiser at Sunflour café, raising $3100 from a combination of raffles, silent auctions and donations.
The café was turned into a pink delight, thanks to the efforts of Tracy Flexman, while diners were serenaded by Avalon. The You Travel team thanked everyone who attended and the sponsors supported the event.
In the afternoon, Gulf Rise Village in Red Beach hosted a special Pink Ribbon high tea with about 80 people attending from the village and guests, raising around $5000.

A group made up of Manly Volunteer Fire Brigade whānau organised a Pink Ribbon breakfast at Manly Fire Station on May 25. Blue Watch Firefighters and a few extras pitched in to help out – which included fingernails painted pink.
“We had a wonderful morning holding a pink ribbon breakfast on station this morning, supporting and raising funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Thank you to all our sponsors, and a big thanks to Michelle and the team for all of their hard work. Just over $2750 was raised. Perhaps we should change Blue Watch to Pink Watch,” a crew spokesperson said.”
On June 19, Michelle McAteer-Ross is organising the “Paint Ōrewa Pink” event, which encourages local businesses to host their own Pink Ribbon events.
In 2017 Michelle was diagnosed with breast cancer and like many others who have been through this journey, it was a hard road for her families and friends.
“Five years ago, I heard about a Pink Ribbon breakfast and thought how awesome it would be to spread the word to other Ōrewa businesses to get involved by having instore specials or donating products to an auction. This set me off on a door knocking journey and I was humbled by the amount of shops, cafes and restaurants that wanted to get involved.”
Last year, the event raised more than $12,000. This year, the event starts with a breakfast at 10am Sunflour Café, while other businesses will have in store specials to support the charity.

Staff at Pinehaven Cottage Residential Care Facility in Hatfields Beach came together this year to show their support for Pink Shirt Day, standing firmly against bullying and discrimination. Diversional Therapist Jayne Minifie says the team proudly supports the event, which promotes kindness and inclusion. Pinehaven Cottage has an anti-bullying policy and is committed to creating a happy, supportive workplace for all its staff, she says.
