Heads bowed last Friday morning at dawn and civic services across the district to respect and remember all New Zealanders who have served in war and conflict. It was noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Over the six years of that conflict, around 140,000 New Zealanders served overseas in the NZ Army, the Royal NZ Navy, the Royal Navy, the Royal NZ Air Force, the Royal Air Force and the Merchant Navy. Of those who served, almost 12,000 did not return, one of the greatest sacrifices of any country in the war.
The messages shared on Anzac Day reflected on both past and current conflicts, and acknowledged that, as a nation, we must remain vigilant to keep the freedoms and way of life that the Anzacs fought for.
Pictured marching in the Wellsford dawn service, held at the memorial gates outside the library, are Rodney College leaders Cody Watson-Walker carrying the NZ flag and Alex Robbins with the Australian flag. Photos, Anna Thoroughgood.
