More than 110 artworks by artists from around the country will be on display at Estuary Arts Centre this month.
The works are entered in the fifth annual Hibiscus & Bays Art Awards. The event is hosted on alternate years by Mairangi Arts Centre and Estuary Arts – this is the third time that the local centre has hosted, and manager Kim Boyd says it’s the biggest yet.
More than 180 works were submitted by 98 artists, from which 110 finalists were selected.
Kim says all art media – such as painting, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking – were accepted for selection with the exception of photography or digital arts as it is felt that that this specialised artform is better represented in stand-alone exhibitions and competitions.
The awards are organised by the Hibiscus Coast Community Arts Council, sponsored by the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board and many other local art businesses. The premier winner will receive $3000 cash and there will be a special Merit Award for an artist from the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board area as well as a youth award.
The judge this year is NZ artist and arts educator Matthew Browne.
The works will be on display at Estuary Arts Centre in Orewa from November 2-26.
