Artists aim to colour the Coast

A group of local artists have come together with the aim of creating more public artworks/murals on the Hibiscus Coast.

John Davies of Future Whangaparāoa Trust brought the group together – they include several young artists, and experienced artist and mural maker Sue Law whose work includes the mural behind Ōrewa Library, on Stanmore Bay toilet and inside Silverdale Hall.

Sue says she likes John’s concept of making more murals around the community.

“The impact of the art is what attracts me and working on a large scale is something I enjoy,” she says.

Other artists involved include Jake Law, Creed, Yvette Donnison, Casey Tuffley, Kate Monroe and Andy Swager.

Several of the artists say they are excited by the chance to give something back to the community through their artworks.

Kate says making public spaces more colourful and vibrant presents an exciting opportunity, while for Creed it’s a bit of fun as well as a contribution to the local community. Jake says it’s important to give young local artists a public place to put their work.

“Art’s valuable to society, it’s all about aesthetics and beauty in public spaces,” he says.

Andy Swager says he’s super excited about anything that brings art to the Coast. “We live in paradise and should celebrate that,” Andy says.

Already, the group has its first potential job. North Harbour Sports & Country Club in Dairy Flat (aka Dairy Flat Club) would like artworks on its seven water tanks – a large ‘canvas’ indeed, John says.

Once a budget is sorted out, John says he will fundraise to fill any funding gaps so that all the artists are paid appropriately for their work.

Currently the artists are preparing design ideas to show the club.

Next they will attempt to get permission to put up a ‘welcome to Whangaparāoa’ mural at the corner of Whangaparāoa Rd and Hibiscus Coast Highway.

There may also be an opportunity to work with Chorus on its streetside cabinets.

John is keen to hear from anyone who would like to offer support such as funding or materials. Contact him on 027 397 8920.
