Auction providing way forward

Theo Simeonidis and his wife Cristina are determined to raise as much as possible for hospice, despite the cancellation of this year’s event. Christina assists with organising the event and she and Theo entertain as Sounds of Greece.

One of the biggest fundraising events on the Coast, the Greek Extravaganza, which was to have taken place on December 4 at the Ōrewa Arts & Events Centre, has had to be cancelled.

However, the organisers, Rotary Satellite Club of Ōrewa-Millwater, have dusted themselves off and put Plan B in place to raise as much money as they can for hospice.

This would have been the 5th anniversary of the Extravaganza, which has so far raised more than $66,000.

It is always a sellout – an evening that celebrates the culture, food, music and dance of Greece.

Theo Simeonidis, the convenor of the event, says he and the Rotary Club put their heart and soul into it, in order to help the community by supporting Hibiscus Hospice.

“Cancellation is devastating on two fronts – it deprives hospice of the funds that we would have raised (last year, more than $23,000) and it also takes away the opportunity for people to enjoy Auckland’s largest showcase of Greek culture,” Theo says.

However, he says it has been heartening to see that a number of the event’s sponsors will donate direct to Hospice, with those contributions totalling $6500.

In addition, an online auction has been organised.

New items are being added to the auction all the time, but so far they include a Power Trike guided tour of the North Shore on a luxury three-seater trike, an artwork by Sam Moore, accommodation at an Air BnB on Ōrewa Beach and a web design and development package from Mars Digital.

The auction goes live this week, onFriday, November 26 at 6pm, and closes on Sunday, December 5 at 6pm.
