Beach provides canvas for public poetry

Ōrewa College student Franki Illing says her Year 7 class has been doing lots of poetry and entering the competition was another way to share her work.

Poets of all ages wrote their work on the sand of Ōrewa Beach to mark National Poetry Day, and potentially win $100 for best poem.

Around 15 people entered the Ōrewa competition on Saturday, August 27, including several school aged poets. The poems were written in the wet sand with sticks and photographed for judging by Siobhan Harvey. Several of the poems were decorated with natural materials found on the beach, including shells.

The winner had not yet been announced when Hibiscus Matters went to print.
