The Hell on the Hill run around the Omaha Quarry loop is back by popular demand.
The not-for-profit event returns on Sunday, September 14 for a second year to fundraise for Cancer Society NZ – and this year children aged 12 and under will be allowed to take part.
Participants can run, jog or walk the 400-metre loop, which features 112 stairs.
They can also choose whether to complete 5, 10, or the maximum 20 laps, which is a lung-busting eight kilometres.
To enter it’s $25 for adults and $15 for kids 12 and under.
Sign-in is 8.30am at the event site, which is accessed from Mangatawhiri Road (see map), with the run scheduled to start at 9am at the Omaha Quarry stairs, and will finish at around midday.
Organiser Heidi Yap says it’s an inclusive, family-friendly event designed for all fitness levels, with no timers, no pressure and no prizes for first place.
“It’s about showing up and giving back, with all proceeds going directly to Cancer Society NZ,” she says.
Last year the event sold out with roughly 30 people taking part and raised over $1000 – with up to 100 participants allowed this time around Yap is hoping to triple that amount.
“The name Hell on the Hill is a nod to the uphill battle faced by those fighting cancer,” she says.
“The intensity of the stairs represents the “hell” participants endure, both physically and emotionally.
This event is especially close to my heart as I’ve watched my Dad walk through his own version of hell on his cancer journey,” she says.
“When the event ran last year, he wasn’t in a good place at all. He’s now in remission with brighter days ahead. I like to think it was the community spirit on the day that boosted his morale and got him through.”
Everyone taking part will receive a goodie bag, there will be spot prizes throughout the day, and participants will be entered into a draw for the overall prize, which is valued at over $1000.
On the day there will also be a sausage sizzle, bake sale, coffee cart, face painting, a bouncy castle (tbc), stalls and fitness challenges.
If the weather makes it unsafe, it’ll be postponed to Sunday, September 21.
There’s still room for a couple more local stalls, so if anyone would like to showcase their product or service on the day email Heidi: fitnesswithheidi.nz@gmail.com
Hell on the Hill is proudly sponsored by Keen Footwear NZ, Italian in the Village, Clay Friends, Matakana Pharmacy, Vitality Art Studio, and many more.
