Community rallies after devastating house fire

A fire at an Ōrewa residence on December 13 left the home and car badly damaged – but the occupants and their much-loved pets are all safe.

However, this family – a grandmother who is caring for two grandchildren  – have lost everything as the home they rent went up in flames in the lead up to Christmas.

Donna Taylor of the support organisation Hibiscus Coast Grandparents Parenting Grandchildren is doing all she can to help. She says sorting out another rental home for the family to live in is the first priority. Their car, which was parked in the driveway, is unusable and may be written off because of fire damage.

Donna is also looking for a large secure storage unit or space to keep any large donated items, such as furniture.

She says the family is very grateful for all the offers of assistance that came flooding in via social media – they are also asking for privacy as they deal with the aftermath of the fire.

Assistance is being channelled through Hibiscus Coast Grandparents Parenting Grandchildren.

Donations to help the family can be made to the HBC Grandparents Inc account – ANZ 06-0383-0138807-000 with the details ‘House Fire’.

Alternatively, if you can offer any other support, email hbcgrandparentsinc@gmail.com ortext Donna, 021 024 300 64.

Donna is working very hard for this family, and all the others that the organisation supports as Christmas approaches, so she thanks everyone for their kindness and patience and asks that people not expect an instant reply.
