Council hosts mini exhibition

Sleepless Nights by Chris Cowley-Thompson.

A new exhibition of abstract art is currently on show at the Kaipara District Council offices in Mangawhai.

The exhibition features the work of four artists whose diverse practices explore abstraction as a powerful visual language. Chris Cowley-Thompson, who is exhibiting Sleepless Nights, says the painting was inspired by what she could see from her dining room window at night.

Originally from Whangārei, Cowley-Thompson has lived in Mangawhai for the past 10 years and describes it as an artistic community.

“It’s really important to have spaces like this [at council], as well as the library or the gallery, where artists can display their work,” she said. “This kind of exhibition helps attract people and encourages them to get to know the village.”

The exhibition also includes Averil Lewis-Roberts’ Interior, Cecilia Young’s Aquatic Symphony, and Phillipa Reeve’s Feels Like Home.

The council offices, located at The Hub, on Molesworth Drive, are open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 3pm. The paintings will be on display until April 23.
