Newly-elected Kaipara Mayor Jonathan Larsen will take home an annual salary of just under $150,000 over the next three years.
The mayor’s pay is set by the Remuneration Authority and can’t be changed by council. It is based on the size of the governance role of each council, the average time required to carry out their duties and a general comparison with parliamentary salaries.
Mayor Larsen’s pay of $143,702 is less than half of what Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown takes home ($318,616).
The total governance remuneration pool for Kaipara’s elected members is $496,127.
At a council meeting on November 26, councillors agreed deputy mayor George Lambeth should be paid $79,515 and councillors $59,515 annually for the 2025-2028 term.
Meanwhile, governance remuneration pool for the Northland Regional Council is $625,339. The chair will receive $144,122, while councillors with no additional responsibilities will receive anywhere between $57,813 and $75,507 annually.
