Dennis Payne of House of Travel Ōrewa recently explored Southern Africa, including the Okavango Delta in Botswana and the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
In the realm of travel, few experiences can match a safari through the untamed landscapes of Southern Africa. Recently, a group of adventurous travellers aged 61 to 79 embarked on an adventure through Southern Africa. It included time at Cape Town and ended with some luxury in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve of Kruger National Park, but the bulk of the trip was based around a Sunway Safari Tour – Botswana Wild Parks Safari – journey through Botswana’s amazing wilderness, which all of the group hailed as their best travel experience, ever.
The tour was tweaked slightly to suit the interests and needs of the travellers, with an opportunity to explore the diverse ecosystems and rich wildlife of Botswana, from exploring the lush waterways of the Okavango Delta by traditional dug-out canoes, alongside hippos and crocodiles, to experiencing the magnificent Victoria Falls in full flow. Known as Mosi-oa-Tunya or “The Smoke That Thunders” in the Lozi language, the falls are formed where the Zambezi River tumbles into deep cataracts, making them easy to view up close.
By contrast, we then explored the vast expanses of the Makgadikgadi Pans (in flood for the first time in years, while we were there) then on through Chobe National Park, with each destination leaving us enthralled.
We were treated to a series of unforgettable moments, such as witnessing an elephant family cross the Chobe River, with mum towing her baby along at times, and marveling at the privilege of seeing vast numbers of wild animals, including the Big Five.
One of the highlights of the tour was the opportunity for cultural interactions with local communities, offering a glimpse into the traditional lifestyles and customs of the people who call this region home. These encounters left a deep appreciation for the cultural aspects of Southern Africa, leaving a lasting impression on the travellers.
As the journey came to a close, the group reflected on their shared experiences and the bonds formed along the way. For many, this was more than just a holiday; it was an adventure, and the enduring spirit of exploration.
The Sunway Safari Tour was an alternate (but amazing) way to experience Africa up close, and represents a wonderful example of how travel can enrich lives and create memories that last a lifetime.
