Fashionable market set for Waipu

Korin (wearing a blue shirt) says the Slow Fashion Markets often turn up great brands at a fraction of the normal retail price.

A Slow Fashion Market will be held in Waipu on Sunday March 15, featuring more than 20 stalls where sellers will offer preloved clothing, footwear and accessories for the whole family.

The event will be held at Coronation Hall, from 10am to 2pm, under the motto: “First in, best dressed – the best finds always go early!”

The main organiser and sales representative, Korin Wairepo, says her goal is to give clothing a longer life, instead of it being worn for just one season.

“I started the market in July 2024. In our first year, we hosted 15 markets and last year, we held 13. Stall numbers vary by venue. We’ve had a few hundred people through the doors at some markets, which creates a great atmosphere,” she said.

Korin admits she has always wanted to bring a market to Waipu, and says the last one in Whangarei was a real success. On one occasion, there were around 80 stalls over two days.

“The good thing about this is you never know what you’ll find – there are so many hidden gems, often great brands at a fraction of the retail price. Every market is different, with new vendors and a new mix of wardrobes each time. I’m really proud of the community we’ve built and how many people are embracing thrift shopping, especially in this economy,” Korin added.

Attendees are advised to bring cash, a tote bag, and be ready for a treasure hunt that promotes sustainable shopping while supporting local sellers.
