This year all proceeds from the Warkworth Volunteer Fire Brigade annual Christmas tree fundraiser will go towards restoring the town’s historic 1942 Ford V8 fire truck.
Senior firefighter Gaye Flewellyn says the brigade purchased the 83-year-old vehicle earlier this year and has already started the restoration project.
“The fire truck was commissioned new at Western Districts Fire Station (which later became Ponsonby Fire Station before being closed in 2016).
“It was sold to Warkworth Volunteer Fire Brigade in March, 1956 and served the district for 20 years before being decommissioned in June, 1976,” she says.
“Then it was bought privately and was in private ownership until March this year.”
Once restored, the vintage fire truck will serve an important ceremonial role.
“It will be used to honour past brigade volunteers at their funerals and also appear at community events such as the Mahurangi Winter Festival of Lights and Santa Parade.”
To get behind the restoration, locals are being encouraged to buy a Christmas tree from the brigade (behind the station).
Xmas trees go on sale on Monday, December 1 and will be available for purchase Monday to Friday, from midday to 6pm, and weekends from 9am to 6pm.
Prices start from $45 for standard trees while special-order XL trees vary in price depending on size – these must be ordered early as there are limited numbers and will sell out fast.
ComGro tree stands, domestic festoon lights and heavy-duty lights will also be available.
As well as the Xmas tree sales, the brigade is seeking the support of local businesses and individuals who can contribute to the fire truck’s restoration through a tiered sponsorship programme, with packages starting from $1000.
