About 30 visitors were given a behind-the-scenes look at Mangawhai’s first retirement village during a VIP tour of The Tides at Mangawhai Heads last Thursday.

Guests were shown the first seven villas completed as part of Stage 1 of the development, which will eventually include 26 villas. The project is planned to be built in six stages over the next six years with 160 villas in total.

Village manager Leanne MacDonald said the development had generated strong interest from the local community.

“The majority of enquiries have come from people who already live in the Mangawhai area or whose family live here,” she said.

She added that the Tides has been designed with sustainability as a key focus, reflecting the growing demand for environmentally conscious living in retirement communities.

The village will feature both two- and three-bedroom villas, with prices starting from $925,000.

Future stages will add more amenities for residents. Stage 2 is set to include a central clubhouse with a swimming pool, gym, library, café lounge and workshop spaces.

Jim and Jean Fountain, of Mangawhai: “We’re not ready to make the move yet, but when the time comes, we want to stay in Mangawhai so we’ve come to see what the village has to offer.”
Jennie Woodside and Janine Broughman, both of Mangawhai: “It’s very nice.”
Terry and Lorraine Edlin, of Mangawhai: “We’re really impressed by the quality of the villas, and the indoor/outdoor flow makes them feel quite spacious.”

In the longer term, the development will also include a wellness centre, as well as rest home and hospital-level care facilities.

The first residents are expected to move into the village in July.

The Tides is owned by Metlifecare, one of New Zealand’s larger retirement village operators, and the development is the first retirement village to be built in Mangawhai.
