Fitness classes take it outside

This month, local gyms and personal trainers jumped to it when Auckland’s step one of Level 3 allowed outdoor exercise classes for groups of 10, spaced 2m apart.

Large gyms such as Northern Arena in Silverdale and the Leisure Centre in Stanmore Bay began offering outdoor classes, socially distanced.

And members keen to get back into their fitness routines were quick to sign up online to take part.

A number of local personal trainers and Tai Chi instructors also took their work outside.

Cardio, cycle, dance and yoga workouts took place in Northern Arena’s purpose built outdoor ‘yard, as well as the carpark, while Leisure Centre instructors took several Les Mills classes, as well as Iyengar Yoga, in the reserve around the centre.

Small groups were able to greet the sun with early morning Tai Chi and Qigong in Arundel Reserve, Ōrewa, thanks to Henri-Noel Venturini of Balanced Energy and FunFit’s Laurinda Howarth took her programme for women on the courts of Ōrewa Primary School.

“We’re coming into summer so we need to create that connection and support that you get from group classes – even though we can’t touch,” Laurinda says.
