Friendship invitation extended

The Mahurangi Friendship Club in Snells Beach is on the lookout for new members.

For 35 years, the club has been providing older people with a place to socialise and make new friends, but its membership has more than halved since covid.

The group meets at Snells Beach Community Church on the first Wednesday of the month, from 9.45am to noon, with tea and biscuits provided.

Meetings usually feature two speakers. A guest speaker gives a 45-minute talk on a topic of interest, with past speakers including politicians, sportspeople and medical professionals. Then, a club member gives a 10-minute talk sharing their life experiences, interests or career.

The club also organises visits to places of cultural and general interest, including Motat’s Aircraft Museum, Auckland Museum and Auckland Zoo. Upcoming outings include the Albertland Museum in Wellsford, Warkworth Satellite Station and the Auckland Planetarium.

Vice-president Dennis Lewis said the club was primarily about helping people connect and make new friends.

“We look after our members to make sure they are well and that nobody is isolated or without support,” he said.

“Because covid was so frightening for some older people, it has been difficult to encourage some to return to environments involving close contact, which has contributed to our reduced numbers.”

Annual membership costs $30 for an individual or $50 for a couple.
