Gala gladness: new date for Whangaparāoa gala

The watery dunking, pictured in 2021, will be a little colder than usual for the teachers of Whangaparāoa School this year.

Whangaparāoa primary school is excited to be holding its gala this month after it had to be postponed in March due to Covid-19.

Normally one of the last galas for the summer, this time it is one of the first out of the blocks, being held on September 10.

“It’s definitely going to be colder for Dunk the Teacher this year,” says co-organiser Jenny Lisefski.

As well as Dunk the Teacher, child pleasers include a lolly hunt, the second hand toy stall and plenty of games.

This year school joined the Garden to Table Programme where students participate in growing their own food, preparing recipes, and then sitting down to enjoy the food together. Garden to Table will have a stall with seedlings grown by students for sale. It will also feature produce like herbs, worm juice, and maybe even worms!

The gala will open with a kapa haka performance by students and other live performances will include music by Whangaparāoa College bands, and scenes from the upcoming Whangaparāoa School musical, Madagascar.

Food stalls include mussel fritters from Manly Park Kitchen, nachos, a sausage sizzle, coffee carts, sushi, candy floss, ice creams and the popular cake stall.

The gala is the main fundraiser for the school.
