Generous donations fund new wheels for Mark

From left, Mark Tainui is on the road again after his gym, the community and ACC covered the cost of a new car. Mark, centre, with supporters from Anytime Fitness Myra Rogers, left, and Amon Parker.

A charity Spinathon held in July, coupled with funds from ACC, have enabled Stanmore Bay’s Mark Tainui to replace his vehicle.

The car unlocks independence for Mark, who is disabled after suffering a stroke seven years ago.

Since the stroke Mark has worked hard, learning how to speak and walk again.

His rehabilitation includes strength work at Anytime Fitness gym in Whangaparāoa. When Mark could not afford to replace his car after it developed serious mechanical issues, the gym organised the Spinathon, hoping to raise enough for another vehicle.

Sixty-four Coasties rode the stationery bikes in the 48-hour charity event.

In October, $18,030 from ACC was added to the Spinathon’s tally of $8775 and a new Mitsubishi ASX was purchased. It was adapted to suit his needs.

Anytime Fitness also contributed more than $1000 for one year’s car insurance and petrol vouchers.

Anytime Fitness co-manager, Myra Rogers, says Mark is now at the gym twice a day. “He still cannot believe that he gets to drive such a flash car around,” she says.
