Green-fingered ladies jump red light to raise funds

Floral flair – the ladies of Ōrewa Garden Club in their horticultural hats.

Ōrewa Garden Club has done it again, defying Covid-19 constraints and raising more money than ever before at its annual fundraising lunch for Harbour Hospice.

More than 50 women gathered in Dee and Lloyd Farrand’s garden on Upper Waiwera Road on Thursday, January 20, missing the restrictive move into the red traffic light setting by a matter of days.

This was the second time the event had been held at the hillside property and attendees once again enjoyed a floral hat contest, raffle baskets, a plant stall and a shared lunch and drinks on the deck overlooking a lake.

Club treasurer Linda Mellor said many thanks were due to the Farrands for opening up their home again.

“The garden looked amazing and enhanced the atmosphere of a beautiful garden party,” she said.

Harbour Hospice’s Hibiscus Coast volunteer coordinator, Karen Little, was on hand to judge the many floral hats on display, selecting Adrianne Power’s straw hat with birds as the winner.

“I don’t know where she found those cute little birds, but they set off her hat beautifully,” Linda said. “We also had a great response from members and local businesses to our request for raffle gift baskets and sponsorship and it just goes to show that, even in these difficult times, there is still keen support for worthy community events.”

The garden party raised $1785 for Hospice, more than $425 than the same event last year.

Linda was keen to thank the following Hibiscus Coast sponsors: Ramada Suites ‘The Nautilus’; Puhoi Cosy Cottage; Telos Group Real Estate; Nadia van Zyl & Chris Bone, Barfoot & Thompson; Mike Pero Real Estate; Fuchsia Hair Design; Bunnings Warehouse; Gatmans Mowers & More; Flowers by Joanne; Forrest Funeral Services and New World Ōrewa; plus Esk Valley Wines.
