Health Month: ‘Be Brave. Be Real.’

Homebuilders coordinator Quentin Jukes.

Homebuilders coordinator Quentin Jukes says Men’s Health Month is a reminder for men to take their wellbeing seriously and to recognise that doing so benefits everyone around them.

“Looking after yourself both physically and emotionally is not only a real gift to ourselves as men, but also to the people that we love and care about. That means doing things that take a little bit of time and energy,” he says.

“Once we’ve got ourselves sorted, or on the right track at least, then we can be there for our family and loved ones.”

Regular health check-ups are a good place to start. That includes things like getting your prostate checked, blood tests, and a mole map every year.

Jukes says many men tend to downplay or ignore health issues, especially when it comes to mental health.

“We often hear that things are okay when they’re not. I think it’s pretty common for a guy to ignore a problem, that it’ll be okay.”

Support starts with speaking up.

“It’s important to talk to someone whether it’s your GP, a trusted family member or friend who’s going to give you good advice, and being brave enough to share that stuff – to be real. You don’t have to carry it by yourself.

“If something’s not quite right, it can be overwhelming, so sharing what’s going on can help relieve some of that pressure.”

Moreover, Jukes believes good habits set an example.

“There’s men who want to be a good father and by walking the walk they show their kids how to look after themselves as well. They can become a role model.”
