Home owners are being urged to take extra care around open fires and electric appliances this winter. Over the last three years, there has been a 16 per cent increase in the number of fire claims between summer and winter with a nearly 20 per cent increase in the cost of those claims.
The leading cause of fires in the home starts in the kitchen, mainly from kitchen appliances or unattended stove tops and ovens.
However, the number of fireplace related fire claims in winter increased by 80 per cent along with a 70 per cent increase in fire claims resulting from heating sources such as heaters and electric blankets.
