he seawall strengthening and road widening project on Insley Street has been extended to include a section of Black Swamp Road, adding a further six to eight weeks to the construction timeframe.
While construction on the Insley Street section is complete, sign installation, line marking and some road delineation are still to be finished.
The expanded project includes an additional section of protective seawall and a three-metre-wide shoulder on Black Swamp Road. Roadworks will extend from the bridge on Insley Street to the entrance to the holiday park, with traffic management in place during the works.
The project was announced earlier this year as part of Kaipara District Council’s roading resilience programme to strengthen one of Mangawhai’s most important transport links against coastal erosion and future storm damage.
Insley Street is one of only three access routes in and out of Mangawhai and carries more than 8000 vehicles each day, providing a vital link for residents, Mangawhai Beach School and visitors.
The project includes a three-metre-wide rock revetment seawall, road widening, drainage improvements and road repairs to strengthen the causeway while improving pedestrian safety. Council says the rock revetment, which has an expected design life of 50 years, was chosen because it provides a more resilient solution in a dynamic coastal environment.
Mayor Jonathan Larsen previously described Insley Street as “a critical linkage for Mangawhai”, saying the project would help ensure local and surrounding communities remained connected while improving pedestrian safety.
The additional Black Swamp Road work is being funded through Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Low Cost Low Risk programme.
