Last Post baton passes down the generations

Hundreds of people gathered for the Matakana service in near perfect weather.

There was a new face taking a lead role at the annual Anzac Day service in Matakana this year, when young trumpet player Macy Rodgers stepped up to play the Last Post and the Rouse.

Twelve-year-old Macy had some big boots to fill, since the passing last June of veteran bandsman and music teacher Bruce Borthwick, who played his last Matakana service a year ago at the ripe old age of 93.

Although 81 years younger than her predecessor, young Macy has excellent brass instrument credentials, being the daughter of Warkworth Big Band manager and trumpeter Aaron Rodgers. She has been playing trumpet since she was five.

Matakana War Memorial conservator and Anzac Day service convenor Adrienne Miller said afterwards that Macy’s performance had been amazing.

“Absolutely faultless,” she said. “An honourable replacement for Bruce – he would be so proud.”

Speakers at the Matakana service included Reverend Annie Mellor, Raj Kesha and Gay Smith, and music was provided by Claude Poulsen, Bern Green, Jade River Ukes and piper Ross Hetherington.
