Four weeks before he was to get married, Andrew Phillipps, 48, of Manly took on a challenge by Anytime Fitness gym to get in shape for Spring.
When lockdown came, two weeks into the new regime, he says it actually made controlling his eating easier.
“There were no takeaways and of course you don’t go socialising, so temptation was out of the way,” Andrew says.
Over 10 weeks, he lost around 8kg using an app called My Fitness Pal that keeps track of your kilojoule intake.
“Last lockdown I was running every day, but I still put on weight,” he says. “This time, managing how much I was eating meant that as well as losing weight, my running got faster.”
His wedding to Armelyn was postponed a couple of weeks and the happy occasion eventually took place in a 10-person bubble on September 23.
Andrew says he still has a few more kilos to lose, but the change he’s made has had time to become a lifetime habit.
“I’ve done the hard yards, so I’ll keep going with it,” he says. “Once I’m at my goal weight I’ll just lift the kilojoule limit but still keep a handle on it.”
