Local pride was on full display as young athletes from Mangawhai Beach School (MBS) dived headfirst into the action at the record-breaking Zespri AIMS Games 2025.

From the pool to the courts, fields, gym and even the stage, students showed true grit, determination and sportsmanship across 13 different sports.

The Tauranga-based tournament, held from August 30 to September 5, attracted 14,000 competitors from 431 schools across New Zealand. MBS deputy principal Emma Grieve described the week as “an inspiring showcase of sportsmanship, challenge and unforgettable memories” for the school community.

“We were incredibly proud to see our students representing our school with such passion and spirit,” she said. “Their energy and enthusiasm were a testament to their hard work and dedication.”

Now in its 21st year, the AIMS Games has grown into Australasia’s largest annual junior sporting event. Open to athletes aged 11 to 13, it provides a chance for young people to compete as individuals or in teams across 20 sports while also building lifelong friendships and social skills.

The event also emphasises environmental responsibility through its Give Back Games. This year, more than 120 students collected 60kg of rubbish from Tauranga’s beaches – half of it recyclable – and planted nearly 1500 native trees to support local wetlands.

For MBS, the journey to AIMS was made possible thanks to extensive fundraising efforts and the generosity of the wider community.

“On behalf of the school, I’d like to extend a huge thank you to all our supporters,” Grieve says. “This incredible experience would not have been possible without your generous help. A special thank you also to our coaches, managers, and parent helpers for their unwavering commitment. Your support made this a truly memorable week for everyone.”
