Mangawhai teachers join protest

Striking MBS teachers at Mangawhai Village received huge support from passing drivers.

Mangawhai Beach School (MBS) teachers joined thousands of educators, health workers, firefighters and other public servants in the nationwide ‘mega-strike’ on October 23. Taking their protest to local streets, they drew a chorus of supportive honks from passing motorists.

The strike was to highlight urgent issues within the education sector, including the need for safer staffing levels, more manageable workloads and improved working conditions, as well as fairer pay and resources.

MBS deputy principal Emma Grieve says the school’s participation was a collective stand to voice these concerns, which largely centre on ensuring teachers are equipped with sufficient resources to help all students succeed.

“Families were notified well in advance so parents could make alternative care arrangements,” she says. “This action was intended to draw attention to the essential need for greater support and investment in the teaching profession. Thankfully, teacher unions and the Ministry of Education have been back at the table negotiating toward a resolution.”
