Foundation Gallery & Arts Hub and the Barefoot Artists of Leigh are raising money to repaint the Leigh Central water tank.
The original mural on its façade was designed and painted by children from the hub’s first art workshop back in 2020, turning what was once an eyesore into a local landmark.
Hub owner and director Hillary Austin Calder says the water tank was a great blank canvas for the kids to decorate and the completed work enriched the community.
“It’s become a tourist attraction with visitors and wedding parties often seen taking snaps with it as a backdrop to add to their memories of visiting our village.
“The reason for repainting it is to refresh the mural that the first Barefoot’s artists and the hub painted back in 2020.”
She adds, “This time we want to focus on marine imagery so that our art aligns with our seaside location.
“It’s also a way for the newest intake of tamariki at the hub to enjoy seeing their work in a public forum, not to mention the new mural will help to enhance our village visually for locals and visitors alike.
“Please donate so we can achieve a fabulous sea-themed mural and so that our kids can know this is where they live and that their efforts matter.”
Hillary wished to express her thanks to everyone who had generously donated so far.
