A long-awaited upgrade of Shoesmith Hall in Warkworth has been approved by the Rodney Local Board.
The project will create a new recreation space with basketball and pickleball facilities where the former bowling green was located.
Auckland Council parks and community facilities manager (Rodney) Geoff Pitman said the project will cost just under $1 million – $420,000 for deconstruction of the former bowling green and associated outdoor assets, site remediation, detailed design and consents; and $430,000 to $480,000 for the hall upgrade.
He says all costs are indicative at this stage, as final costs will be determined once detailed design work is complete.
The project includes accessibility upgrades, improved facilities, a new accessible toilet and an outdoor deck, providing a more flexible space for groups using the hall.
Work is expected to start in the second half of next year and take between six and eight months, without affecting the use of the hall.
Board chair Guy Wishart says the project aims to ensure the much-loved community space continues to serve local residents well into the future.
“Shoesmith Hall is a place where people meet, learn new skills, celebrate milestones and spend time together,” Wishart says. “The addition of the hardcourt will open new opportunities for informal recreation, particularly for young people and families looking for free ways to stay active.”
Wishart says the Local Board wants to ensure the hall remains fit-for-purpose and continues to host a wide range of activities, from community meetings and classes to celebrations and special events, including dance classes held by the Silver Oaks Scottish Country Dance Club on Friday mornings.
The plans were developed with feedback from current hall users.
