New grants to support Rodney youth projects

Funding could support youth art activities.

Young people in Rodney have the chance to bring their creative ideas to life, thanks to a new funding initiative from the Rodney Youth Project.

The Rodney Youth Small Projects Fund can provide one-off grants of up to $2500 for activities and events created by young people, for young people.

The fund is the second phase of the Rodney Youth Project, which was launched and funded by Rodney Local Board two years ago to provide and support more activities for rangatahi throughout the region.

Rodney youth development coordinator Priscilla McClintock says the Small Projects Fund is looking for applications from now until October, with priority given to youth-initiated projects that offer something new or different for local young people.

“This might include creating spaces where youth can gather and feel at home, running arts or culture workshops, developing outdoor activities or setting up opportunities to learn new skills,” she says.

“Maybe someone wants to run an arts workshop, set up an environmental project, create a new outdoor activity or start something completely different – if it’s fresh, inclusive and youth-focused, we want to hear about it.”

Examples could include a conservation project, a youth art competition, a music gig featuring youth bands or mural art created by young people.

Applicants must live in Rodney and their project needs to take place within the district. Young people must be involved in the design and development of each project, and activities need to give all young people the chance to take part – events that are closed to the public are not eligible. In this instance, youth covers young people aged 12 to 25.

Successful applicants will get support from a youth coordinator to help with marketing, project management, finding venues and so on.

To apply, applicants need to complete an online form by Friday, October 3 and projects need to be completed by the end of March next year.
