New Kaipara residents welcomed

The citizenship ceremony signifies a strong, enduring connection to NZ and grants a greater degree of security and a fuller set of rights than a permanent resident visa. For many, it is the final formal step in the immigration journey.

Former citizens of Australia, Canada, Fiji, France, Germany, United Kingdom, USA, Malta, Morocco, Philippines, Slovakia and South Africa became New Zealand citizens at the end of last month.

Kaipara District Council Mayor Jonathan Larsen officiated the citizenship ceremony held in Dargaville and gave the new citizens a warm welcome, recognising them for choosing to make Kaipara their home.

“We’re proud to welcome our newest citizens and thank you for choosing Kaipara,” Mayor Larsen said.

“You have all called New Zealand your home, now you can also call it your country.”

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Mayor Gordon Lambeth and Councillors Rachael Williams, Snow Tane and Craig Jepson, alongside Resident Naval Officer Lieutenant Commander Michael Smith representing the New Zealand Government.

The ceremony, the final of four for 2025, featured the oath or affirmation of allegiance to New Zealand, marking the final step on the path to citizenship.

With origins spanning the globe, the 28 new citizens brought unique stories.

Steven and Christina came to New Zealand from Germany 16 years ago.

“We came here for a holiday and never left,” Christina said.
