Ōrewa Beach School has a big dream – raising $60,000 to create a DREAMS Hub for its students.
DREAMS stands for design, robotics, engineering, art, mathematics and science, and the hub will be equipped with essential tools like robotics kits, 3D printers, coding software, and electronic circuits, principal Wendy Naidu says.
To help spread the word, students took to the playground recently to create a large-scale chalk drawing to capture what the DREAMS Hub will mean to them.
“The children definitely know what it is about. They’ve seen and heard other schools doing this, and they are excited about getting involved in things like 3D printing and robotics,” Naidu says.
The money raised will go towards upgrading a classroom, equipment, furniture, technology and resources.
“The whole aim of this is to prepare kids by giving them future skills. In class, they are covering the basics, and the DREAM hub will ensure they have the technology skills and opportunities they need for the future,” she says.
A major fundraiser is planned for April 11 – a Fluro Colour Run where students will be sponsored to run laps while being showered in bright coloured powder and slime.
The school is also reaching out to STEM-related and local businesses for sponsorship and support.
