Passion for patchwork on view in Ōrewa

The result of thousands of hours of patience and skill will be on display at the Ōrewa Community Centre this Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22, when the Hibiscus Coast Quilters hold their biennial show.

Around 40 colourful quilts will be on display, including many of the group’s community quilts that they donate to the Red Cross for families in need, as well as members’ entries in the group’s latest challenge – making a “drunkard’s path”. Contrary to the name, this does not involve sewing under the influence, but decorating a quilt with a series of curved fabric pieces.

The show will also feature a selection of “heart cushions”, which members regularly make for cardiac patients at Auckland Hospital, who are given the cushions to hug to ease pain and discomfort if they cough or sneeze.

There will also be several raffles, including one to win a quilt called Autumn Splendour, as well as a stitcher’s hamper and a gourmet hamper.

Quilting fabrics, patterns and sewing accessories galore will be on sale from three visiting merchants – The Country Yard craft barn and patchwork store from Maungatapere, near Whangarei; Apple Basket Quilts from Kaiwaka; and Auckland-based Patchwork Passion, which specialises in Japanese fabrics.

There will also be a café with tea, coffee and plenty of delicious homemade savoury and sweet treats.

The quilt show will be open from 10am to 4pm each day, and entry is $5, under 13s free.
