Principal takes on national education leadership role

Whangaparāoa College Principal Steve McCracken has been appointed Chair of the New Zealand Secondary Principals’ Council, placing a Hibiscus Coast school leader at the centre of national education discussions.

The Council represents secondary and area school principals across Aotearoa and works with education agencies and the Ministry of Education on matters affecting school leadership, including employment conditions and the practical realities of leading large and complex schools.

It provides a collective professional voice for secondary principals at a national level. As Chair, McCracken will lead discussions among principals across the country, help shape the Council’s priorities and represent their shared perspectives in sector conversations.

For Whangaparāoa College and the wider community, the appointment strengthens the College’s connection to national leadership networks and keeps it closely informed about developments affecting secondary schools. It also ensures that the experience of a large, growing community school like Whangaparāoa College is reflected in conversations that influence the wider education sector.

McCracken continues his day-to-day leadership at the College while taking on this additional national leadership role.
