Safe space for Rainbow youth

The Hibiscus Coast is not always a friendly place for members of the rainbow community, according to librarian Pip Stocking.

She says in her role as senior librarian for children and youth at Whangaparāoa Library she heard from many young people about a lack of acceptance and support.

In response, a rainbow support group for people aged 13-18 has been set up at the library, facilitated by Katie McGregor.

Katie, a graphic designer, is relatively new to the Coast and was happy to step in to run the group, after receiving training from Rainbow Youth.

She says it is not about offering counselling – the group provides a social outlet, a safe, fun and inclusive space.

“Anyone can share how they are feeling as well as relax and have fun,” she says. “There’s free food and games.”

The group meets in the Pohutukawa Room at Whangaparāoa Library every Friday, 3.30pm-4.30pm.
