Safer road crossings for Snells

Auckland Transport (AT) plans to install two pedestrian refuges at the northern end of Snells Beach and is seeking public feedback until August 12.

The project will see one crossing island placed in the middle of Mahurangi East Road between Governor Grey and Muncaster Roads and another at the top of Governor Grey. Existing bus stops will also be moved – the stop currently just north of Governor Grey Road will move south to just past the medical centre, at 147 Mahurangi East Road, while the Warkworth-bound stop will be moved just north of Muncaster Road.

According to AT’s project drawings online, the crossing improvements will result in the loss of 10 parking spaces – four to the north and six to the south of Governor Grey Road.

The design was shown to Rodney Local Board members during a workshop last month, during which AT said construction should take place next April, once public engagement, authorisation, detailed design, traffic resolution, tender and procurement processes had been gone through.

AT said the changes would provide the Snells community with safer, more convenient crossing options and improve access to bus stops.

“The crossing islands will be a small section of pavement within the median strip, surrounded by concrete. They will help people crossing the road to wait for a gap in the traffic, while giving way to motorists, then finish crossing over to nearby bus stops,” a spokesperson said.

The workshop also heard that the existing bus shelter at the top of Governor Grey Road would be left where it was and there may be potential for it to be repurposed at some stage in the future.

The funding of around $260,000 for the new refuges is coming from the local board’s transport capital fund.

An earlier concept plan that put the Mahurangi East Road reserve and both bus stops south of Governor Grey Road (MM, Dec 23) was dropped after further investigation by AT found safety concerns around pedestrian visibility.
