Mums have a magical ability to turn the simplest warnings into lifelong mantras, as the entries in our Mother’s Day competition attest. Thanks to our Mums, we know that, “money doesn’t grow on trees”, “if you’re bored, it means you’re boring,” “if you can’t say something nice, you shouldn’t say anything at all,” and soup cures everything, from a broken heart to the flu. And who hasn’t been told, “One day you’ll thank me for this!” or had a question answered with the ultimate conversation silencer, “Because I said so.”
Sometimes the value of her guidance isn’t appreciated until we come face-to-face with life’s challenges or have little people of our own.
