The Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Scouts Group enjoyed a visit to Coastguard Mangawhai last month, with children having the chance to learn about water safety and the importance of community service.
Cubs and Keas were given the opportunity to check out Coastguard Mangawhai’s impressive rescue vessel, RV Kokako, with its twin Mercury 225 outboards and Simrad electronics capturing their attention.
“One of the children said that sitting at the helm station felt like he was in an aircraft cockpit, with all the gauges, dials, screens, and controls,” a Coastguard Mangawhai spokesperson said.
The children also enjoyed exploring the Massey Ferguson four-wheel-drive tractor used by Coastguard Mangawhai for beach launching and retrieving the nine-metre Rayglass Protector rescue vessel.
As reported by the Mangawhai Focus (July 13), the Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Scouts are looking to expand by starting a new Scouts section for young people aged 11 to 14. The group, which restarted two years ago after a long break, is also looking for volunteers to help run the programme.
“We are always on the lookout for adult volunteers to help guide these young adventurers. If you have a particular skill, outdoor experience, or just some spare time you would love to share with the group, we would love to hear from you,” Scouts Group leader Rachel Hawkins said.
