Sunflower growing competition blossoms

The Snells Beach Sunflower Competition attracted young gardeners from across Rodney and concluded at the end of last year after two months of planting, growing and careful tending by local children.

Run by The General Merchant of Snells Beach, in conjunction with The Seedling House, their efforts culminated in three days of measuring to determine which of the junior green thumbs had grown the tallest sunflowers.

The organisers said children, parents and grandparents travelled from as far away as Wellsford for the announcement and gathered outside the General Merchant, drawing the attention of passing holidaymakers who stopped to see what was happening.

Cooper Wilson, 10, took first place after growing a sunflower measuring 2.1 metres, second place went to Michael Turner, 2, whose sunflower reached 1.6 metres and Melia Stevens, 10, came third with a sunflower of 1.2 metres.

The three winners each received a gift voucher to spend at the General Merchant.

Owner Basista Gautam ensured every child who attended left with something to grow at home, gifting vegetable seedlings to all children, whether or not they had entered the competition.

Each family was also given a set of child-sized gardening tools.

The morning ended with a lolly scramble.
