Third time a charm for 50k in a Day walker

Roger White

This month, Ōrewa massage therapist Roger White will spend a day (around 10 hours) walking 50km in Shakespear Regional Park to raise funds for charity.

The challenge is something Roger is well used to – this is his third ‘50k in a Day’ charity walk. He walked seven times around Ōrewa Estuary in 2020 for Adults In Motion and last year completed 50km in Wenderholm Regional Park for the CYC Trust.

The 64-year-old says walking is his main form of exercise, but it’s also much more.

“I follow in the footsteps of the famous New Zealander A H Reed, using walking not only to remain fit and healthy, but also to get out and meet people and promote healthy living,” he says.

Having lived locally for 17 years, he says the local beaches, regional parks, coastline and pathways provide plenty of beautiful places to walk.

For his next walk, on Saturday, March 26, Roger has selected a route that consists of five laps of a 10km circuit within Shakespear Regional Park, starting just after 6am and finishing around 4.30pm.

This time he is raising funds for TimeOut – a charity that provides Kiwis with a terminal illness with the opportunity to have a short break with their family and create some memories to treasure. They do this by connecting them with holiday homeowners who are willing to donate time in their properties free of charge.

TimeOut is always looking for more holiday homeowners prepared to donate a short stay in their property. Info: www.timeoutnz.org
