Lions Club of Kowhai Coast members Gay Smith, Olywn Hill and Kristine Bayer thought they were just attending the 40th anniversary of the club held at the Salty Dog in Snells Beach on May 25.
Imagine their surprise when they were called up one at a time in front of 60 people to each be honoured with the Melvin Jones Fellowship award, the highest form of recognition from Lions Clubs International, for giving selflessly to their community.
“We had no idea, it was a fantastic,” they said. In total, the women have contributed 123 years of service.
