A sparkling line-up of gowns spanning eight decades will take centre stage in Ōrewa next month, at an evening of fashion and nostalgia, in support of Harbour Hospice at Ōrewa Events Centre.
On September 13 from 7.30pm to 9.45pm, the catwalk will be transformed into a time capsule of bridal fashion, with around 40 wedding dresses charting changing styles from the 1950s to the 2020s. Each decade will be introduced with original photos and stories, allowing the audience to enjoy both the elegance of the gowns and the memories they evoke.
The event promises more than just frocks and frills. Organisers say there will be plenty of light-hearted storytelling, with brides sharing their own anecdotes to accompany the dresses. Guests can expect a mix of glamour and humour as the show highlights how Hollywood icons, the Royal family, and shifting social trends influenced the way brides walked down the aisle.
A highlight of the evening will be the unveiling of “The Private Collection” from Vinka Design, featuring original gowns by pioneering New Zealand bridal designer Vinka Lucas MNZM. Lucas, who began designing in 1959, became one of the country’s first true fashion couturiers, creating gowns for Miss New Zealand winners, opera stars, parliamentarians’ wives, and society brides. This rare collection of her work has never been seen by the public before and offers a special glimpse into the artistry that defined her career.
Organisers encourage guests to gather friends and make a night of it to support Harbour Hospice, which will benefit directly from the evening. All funds go towards hospice’s specialist palliative care services. These are offered free of charge to anyone in need, thanks to donations and events like this one.
