Writing workshops coming to Warkworth

The one-off intergenerational writing workshop at East Coast Bays Library last year was epic.

Here’s a novel idea for aspiring Rodney writers.

Coatesville poet Johanna Emeney and St Cuthbert’s writing programme head Ros Ali are holding three creative writing workshops at Warkworth Library in March next year that are intergenerational.

“We hope that by inviting two distinct age groups to come along, 14 to 25-year-olds and over 60s, we’ll encourage not only a lively and interesting exchange of life experiences and viewpoints, but that the group will form some lasting bonds in the community,” Emeney says.

In the past, the pair has facilitated this type of intergenerational class on the North Shore with great success, so they are hoping that Rodney writers will be as keen and receptive.

“Our last workshop at the East Coast Bays Library in 2024 attracted diverse ages, from early 20s to early 80s; a mother and daughter also attended, which was special. We only did one workshop, which had a waiting list of 20.”

Genres covered at the Warkworth workshops will include memoir, auto-fiction, poetry, prose and creative nonfiction.

Emeney says it’s a chance to learn some new writing tricks and make some new friends.

“So where are all the Rodney writers? The North Shore is teeming with them.”

The workshops have been made possible thanks to funding from Creative Rodney – Making Art Work initiative from the Rodney Local Board, which supports and enables community-led art activities.

Registrations are open now for the classes which will take place at Warkworth Library on 14, 21 and March 28 next year, from 10am to 12.30pm.
